Open Standards: Lasting the Life of the Building

At Daintree Networks, being "open" is more than just a feature—it's a way of life. Daintree provides the industry's first truly open wireless controls solution, using the ZigBee® standard to create innovative control products for lighting and beyond. The result is a future-proof lighting control solution that will last the life of any building, tied to a trusted industry standard rather than the development schedule of a single company.

Daintree Networks and Open Standards

Open architectures and industry standards have the power to dramatically reduce costs, improve customer choice, provide reliability and trust, and ultimately drive greater innovation and value. This happens through "interoperability" - when different manufacturers build their products based on the same set of standards, so company A's fixtures and ballasts work seamlessly with Company B's switches and Company C's sensors.

Unlike proprietary lighting control systems, Daintree's ControlScope solution can work with any sensor, switch, and fixture - regardless of the lighting source - and we do not require you to replace existing products with our own proprietary hardware. Instead, we enable control devices (such as ballasts, LED drivers, sensors and switches) to interoperate wirelessly, through our fast-growing ControlScope Connected ecosystem of partners and our line of ZigBee wireless adapters. We can also integrate with Building Management Systems via the commonly-used BACnet protocol.

Why do standards and interoperability matter now? Because in the end, proprietary "closed" systems always lose in the market - leaving today's customers stuck with high prices, limited choices and obsolete systems.

Open vs proprietary protocols

Daintree Networks is the only lighting controls supplier committed to enabling wireless lighting solutions using widely adopted, open standards-based wireless technologies. This provides many benefits over proprietary network protocols:

  • lower cost components
  • greater choice of products
  • compatibility with other standards-based building automation systems and components
  • the ability to easily add other non-lighting devices (plugloads, HVAC, etc.) and innovate for greater value over time
  • peace of mind that the technologies based on the standard will still be around in years to come

ZigBee

ZigBeeZigBee is an open standard that was created to address the market need for a cost-effective, standards-based wireless networking solution that supports low data-rates, low-power consumption, security, and reliability. ZigBee makes it practical to embed wireless communications into lighting and other building control devices.

The ZigBee Alliance is a non-profit association of more than 400 members driving development of ZigBee wireless technology. The Alliance promotes world-wide adoption of ZigBee as the leading wirelessly networked, sensing and control standard for use in commercial, industrial, energy, home, and consumer electronic areas.
